Exide opens second India lead smelter |

Battery producer and recycler Exide Industries Ltd from Mumbai, India will invest 350 million rupees (US$8.2 million) to set up a second smelter in India.
The firm is in talks with local smelter firms, it says. In October 2007, Exide Industries had bought lead smelter Tandon Metals Pvt Ltd, to access recycled raw materials and cut dependence on high-cost imported lead. ... more

The Steering Committee of the ‘Green Lead’ project, a lead industry product stewardship initiative, has received financial support from the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) for its development workshop in London on April 27-28.
An inter-governmental financial institution established by the United Nations, CFC’s main objective is to assist developing nations which are dependent on the production and export of primary commodities. The 12th International Congress for Battery Recycling, staged by Swiss organisation ICM, will take place on June 20-22 this year in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
Set to attract leading experts in the field, the event will include: an update of global legislative issues surrounding the battery industry; reports on the implementation of the EU’s new Battery Directive; an outline of recent developments relating to battery manufacturers’ recycling activities; an overview of the international battery market and collection systems; and an analysis of safety issues in the production, use, collection and recycling of batteries. Other themes to be covered will include: eco-design and the ‘removeability’ of batteries from electronics; hybrid vehicles; mobile phone battery systems; developments in rechargeable battery technologies; best available technologies for battery recycling; and the impact of the EU’s REACH and RoHS regulations on battery manufacturers and recyclers.

New plant for Dutch battery processor |

W. A. van Peperzeel - the Dutch firm specialising in collecting, sorting and processing household/car batteries and non-ferrous metals - has laid the foundation stone for its new plant at Lelystad in the Netherlands. The formal ceremony was performed by company founder Wim van Peperzeel, father of current Managing Director Johan en Marco van Peperzeel.
Since its formation in 1978, the family-owned company has enjoyed continuous growth, notably after it sealed a contract with Dutch battery association Stibat in 1996 which covered the sorting of all household batteries collected in the Netherlands. In October 2003, W. A. van Peperzeel acquired the car battery division of waste management company Sita - a deal which led directly to the proposal to construct a larger plant.
